Born in Los Angeles as Hollywood was taking shape, Anna May Wong falls in love with the movies, saving her lunch money to see films at the nickelodeon after school. Against her father's wishes, she leaves the family laundry to become an actress, only to run into the hard reality of race in casting.
Pigeonholed as the deceitful “dragon lady” or the naive “butterfly,” Anna May struggles to land leading roles in America, while being shamed by the Chinese community for portraying their culture in a negative light. Yellow Frosted Willow follows a talented, ambitious actress in her search for acceptance from the film industry, the American public, and her own Chinese heritage.
